Whilst we were on our short break we stayed
at a lovely old hotel that was once a workhouse called Brynafon Country House
Hotel. We were pretty much the only
ones staying there as the owners, who’d only had it for a few months, were
planning to close it down for a major refit before next summer’s trade. Just up the road from the hotel was Gigrin
Farm; the reason we had chosen Rhayadar as our base in the first place. Gigrin Farm is an official Red Kite feeding station
set up with the help and blessing of the RSPB.
It has to have its own dedicated fenced off field, so no sheep or cattle
eat grass that’s had raw meat on it, due to the fear of foot and mouth. This
was a truly amazing sight to see with hundreds of Red Kites coming in to top up
their food intake. Photographing this
feeding frenzy was very difficult as the birds are so fast and never fly in a
straight line. I was using a shutter speed of 1000th of a second and
on many shots this was not fast enough to stop the bird’s movement.
This
is something I’d highly recommend to anyone and will definitely do again.
