Elie & Sheryl

When Sylvia (a friend of mine) asked if I would be interested in photographing a gay wedding, I jumped at the chance.  So she introduced me to Elie and Sheryl, a lovely couple, who said they were up for anything.  Whilst this was true of Elie, Sheryl was more reserved and had to be coaxed a little.  Despite this we had a great day as they and their friends are really good fun and quirky.

The wedding and reception were held at the Hilton Hotel, Collingtree which is a modern, light building with some interesting photographic features.  The weather was a little bright which caused some harsh shadows but for the time of year I think we were lucky.

Below is a small selection of images from the day.

ROC the laying up of the Banner

We were delighted, when asked to be the official photographers for the ROCA (Royal Observer Corps Association) at St Clement Danes Church, for the laying up of the ROC banner.

“Over 350 former members of the Royal Observer Corps, together with families, friends and many VIP Guests, gathered together in the Church of the Royal Air Force to witness the Laying Up of their Sovereigns Banner in the Church of St Clement Danes.
Travelling from all four corners of the UK they felt the emotion of the moment, as the last chapter in the unique history of the Royal Observer Corps was written.” Taken from the ROCA’s official website http://www.rocatwentytwelve.org

It was, as you’d expect, quite a splendid affair with a Royal Airforce band, lots of medals and a number of dignitaries

Holiday Continued

Whilst we were on our short break we stayed at a lovely old hotel that was once a workhouse called Brynafon Country House Hotel.   We were pretty much the only ones staying there as the owners, who’d only had it for a few months, were planning to close it down for a major refit before next summer’s trade.  Just up the road from the hotel was Gigrin Farm; the reason we had chosen Rhayadar as our base in the first place.  Gigrin Farm is an official Red Kite feeding station set up with the help and blessing of the RSPB.  It has to have its own dedicated fenced off field, so no sheep or cattle eat grass that’s had raw meat on it, due to the fear of foot and mouth. This was a truly amazing sight to see with hundreds of Red Kites coming in to top up their food intake.  Photographing this feeding frenzy was very difficult as the birds are so fast and never fly in a straight line. I was using a shutter speed of 1000th of a second and on many shots this was not fast enough to stop the bird’s movement.

This is something I’d highly recommend to anyone and will definitely do again.

Holiday

My wife and I decided to take a short break between weddings.  We chose Rhayadar mid Wales as our destination.  It’s a small town and like most of Wales is surrounded with some lovely and dramatic views.  We were very lucky as the weather was warm and sunny, probably the first time we’ve been to Wales and it’s not rained!  Whilst there we had a day out at the Elan Valley, which boasts some amazing scenic views set around reservoirs and dams.  Anyone that knows me knows I’m not a natural landscape photographer. I see the abstract image but not always the larger view, so I really enjoyed the discipline required.

John & Sophie

We were pleased when John and Sophie booked us to cover their wedding.  It wasn’t until our second meeting that they told us we had been recommended by Tom and Lizzie, a former bride and groom of ours, which is always better than any advert.
We knew this was going to be challenging a few days before the wedding, when we found out the church, St Katherine’s in Droughton, had no electric lighting.  Like a lot of old churches it is very dark inside, however we didn’t need to worry as the vicar allowed us to use flash which is quite unusual.  We then moved off to Hunsbury Hill Centre for the reception.  Sophie had laid out a vintage style reception whilst John, who’s a Marvel comic fanatic, added a few touches of his own.  The wedding was great fun for everyone involved and we got some great images.

The Marvel theme gave me the idea of creating a newspaper front page, and the opportunity to play with Photoshop, which was great as I don’t get the time just to play these days.

Below is a small selection of images from the day, including the front page I created.
